In the 1980s, Shoko Suzuki revealed her quest for a dialogue between the ceramic surface and the internal space of the material. Vertical and austere, the terracotta volume displays an incision that breaks its smoothness, suggesting a tension between restraint and openness. The gesture of the cut - precise yet organic - moves away from ornamentation and toward an investigation of the body of the ceramic and its reverse side. This formal economy, combined with the chromatic subtlety of the clay, reflects the silent and disciplined poetics that permeate her production.
