The Impulses series is part of Amelia Toledo's extensive research into mineral materials, an investigation that goes back to her childhood and the impact of the experience of visiting a salt mine in Salzburg, Germany, when she was still living there with her family. His mother was a painting student and his father a pathological anatomy researcher. With a grant awarded to her father by the Rockefeller Foundation to work as a researcher in Germany, the family moved to Munich and Freiburg. Since then, an interest in the matter of the Earth and the formal possibilities of nature has become a structuring axis of the artist's work.

In the sculptures in the series, Amelia resumes this original link with the “flesh” of the Earth, working with the plurality of Brazilian stones in a way that preserves their integrity, while proposing discreet formal changes. The partial polishing and the tailored fit between stone and base are reminiscent of the artist's earlier practices, in works such as Ondas [Waves] and Periscópio [Periscope], in which the relationship between support and object is one of complementarity and mutual adaptation. In addition to the sculptural dimension, Impulses suggests a sensory and symbolic journey, linked to the movement from the underground to the surface. The gathering of the pieces generates a palette of colors and textures that are articulated in subtle variations, reinforcing the perception of geological time contained in the stones.
