A cruz, nesse contexto, ultrapassa a dimensão religiosa, carregando referências históricas, políticas e pessoais.

EN

In the final years of his career, Antonio Dias focused his production on pictorial compositions of a structural nature, exploring the relationships between surfaces, volumes, and supports. Recognized since the 1960s for a body of work that moves between painting, drawing, objects, installations, and video, he developed over the decades a distinctive vocabulary marked by a keen attention to form and the precise use of plastic resources. From 2010 onward, he intensified his interest in the spatial construction of painting and in the application of mineral pigments, iron oxides, and metals, emphasizing the materiality and texture of the surface, as well as the effects of time’s action on matter.

In Untitled (2014), the cruciform configuration acts as the structuring axis of the pictorial space. Michael Asbury notes that “the cross appears, sometimes explicitly, sometimes by association, deduction or extrapolation, as a recurring figure throughout the work of Antonio Dias, articulating the dichotomy between the autonomy of the modules and their relationship with the external environment.” In this context, the cross surpasses the religious dimension, carrying historical, political, and personal references. The use of gold and copper—metals traditionally associated with value and permanence—in contrast with the iron oxide surface, reinforces the role of matter as an active agent in dialogue with time and space, consolidating the work as a synthesis of the formal and conceptual concerns of his final phase.
