In A utopia é aqui (Utopia is here), Marcelo Cipis once again resorts to graphic humor and the formal simplicity of a motif he has worked with repeatedly throughout his career. The figure — suspended between a human profile and a melted form, with a nose that evokes, without stating, the fable of Pinocchio — embodies a state of instability and doubt. In the center of the image, the inscription “Utopia is here” operates as both an affirmation and irony. By declaring the presence of utopia in the present, Cipis dismantles the traditional notion of utopia as an unattainable and future project, proposing it as a present, collective, and necessarily imperfect construction. The figure, in its melancholic and almost comical aspect, denounces the collapse of this ideal in the face of reality. As in other works by the artist, the simple line harbors critical commentary on the contemporary world, its impasses and unfulfilled promises – all stitched together by the artist's customary sense of humor.
