PT

EN

The works by Marcelo Cipis presented here employ an image transfer technique using catalogs from the Sears, Roebuck and Company store from the mid-1910s, featuring female and male figures originally used to display clothing. By appropriating these advertising portraits, Cipis displaces them from their original context and overlays them rhythmically and fragmentedly onto colored backgrounds and abstract geometric shapes. The compositions visually evoke playing cards, with duplicated and juxtaposed faces along diagonal axes, accompanied by graphic elements that, according to the artist, “vaguely resemble card suits”. The artist transforms mass-consumption materials into hybrid and enigmatic images, creating a visual arrangement rich in explicit conceptual references characteristic of his practice.
